Fuji Electric Power Semiconductors – Driving Efficient Energy Conversion

Semiconductors are a key technology in modern electronic systems. Over the past five decades, advances in power semiconductor technology have enabled more efficient, reliable, and compact energy conversion across industrial, automotive, and energy applications. For more than 50 years, Fuji Electric has contributed to this development with a comprehensive portfolio of power semiconductor solutions. These include IGBT modules for high power density and robust operation, silicon carbide (SiC) devices that enable higher switching frequencies and improved thermal performance, as well as MOSFETs, diodes, power semiconductor modules, and control ICs. Fuji Electric components are used in renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, industrial drives, and energy infrastructure worldwide. They are designed to support efficient power conversion, stable system control, and long service life under demanding operating conditions. Our development focus is on performance, reliability, and sustainable system efficiency. By continuously advancing semiconductor technology, Fuji Electric supports the transition toward increasingly electrified and energy-efficient applications.

What are Power Semiconductors?

A semiconductor is a substance that conducts electricity easily while acting as an insulator to prevent the flow of electricity. The use of semiconductors enables the rectification of the current flow in one direction, the amplification of the electrical signals and the switching to open and close the current flow.

Power semiconductors can handle high voltages and large currents.

Failures can occur due to a rise in temperature caused by heat generation when operating large powers. Therefore, Fuji has been working on developing methods to reduce the loss of semiconductors and effectively dissipating the generated heat to the outside.

Power semiconductors are mainly used in power conversion, e. g. changing voltages and frequencies and converting direct current to alternating current (DC->AC) and vice versa. Power semiconductors play an indispensable role in precisely driving motors at low to high speeds, supplying power grids with electricity generated from solar cells with lower power losses, and providing a stable power source for various home appliances and electrical equipment.

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need to save energy and reduce power consumption, and as a result, the need for power semiconductors that minimize power loss has increased.
